1. Communicate expectations to everyone who will be in your home.

Of course you can work from home but still have “company”. Make sure your roommates, family members, and dogs (okay, maybe not dogs) respect your space during work hours. Just because you work from home doesn't mean you're home.

If you're sharing space with another adult who works from home, you may need to set ground rules for meeting times, shared desks and chairs, and quiet times.

2. Take clear breaks.

As a telecommuter, it's so easy to get distracted that you avoid taking breaks altogether. Don't let the guilt of working in the building you sleep in stop you from taking five minutes to relax.

However, instead of just opening up YouTube and watching a few comfort videos, use your breaks to get away from your desk. Go for a walk, get some fresh air, or spend time with other people who may also be in the house.

Combat boredom and loneliness by communicating frequently with other employees. Communicate with them via video chat using apps like Zoom and Slack, ahosted phone system, or however your company communicates.

Remember: you work from home, not from the moon. You are allowed to interact with other people during the day, even if they are not your companions. It's a good idea to see a different face during the day when you spend most of your workday lonely. So use your breaks to talk to others.

When you're at home, it can be tempting to spend time preparing hearty breakfasts and lunches, snacking, and cooking. Don't spend precious minutes at work preparing your meal - cook it the night before.

It is also important that you maintain an appropriate sleep schedule. Save yourself the hassle of watching your favorite shows at the weekend. With the right diet to keep energy levels up and restful sleep that refreshes your mind and body, you can work from home successfully.

7. Talk to your employer.

If you like your current job and don't want to change it, the obvious thing to do is find a way to change jobs.

One of the tips for doing this is to include the ability to walk the distance in your next advertising cycle. Talk to your boss often about your intention to change.
