Scrabble rules: how to play, points, scoring and strategy (1)

Scratchis the most popular and recognizable wordtile based gamein the world. The origin of this modern classic dates back to 1938, whereAlfred Mosher asses, an American architect, created the first version of the game. At this point, the now ubiquitous 15x15 board and addictive gameplay were already in place. It was in 1948 that the rights to the idea were purchased and the name Scrabble was introduced.

How to play Scrabble?

Scrabble is a board game for 2 to 4 players, and everything you need to play is included in the box. The 15x15 board and 100-letter tiles are all you need to play, and the complimentary tile holders can be used to hold the tiles.

The game is designed for 2 to 4 players, but competitive scenarios are usually for 2 players. There are also rule variations that allow 2 teams of two. Regardless, the rules and instructions remain identical.

before the game

Setting up the game is simple. The 100 letter tiles are placed in an opaque bag provided to ensure a fair draw. An addictive or word list is specified to resolve possible disputes about the validity of words that may occur throughout the game.

Turn order is determined by each player purchasing a token. The player who approaches a letter that occurs first in alphabetical order goes first. Blank tiles will win when drawn against an 'A' tile.

(Video) SCRABBLE Rules | How To Play Scrabble | Rules of Scrabble EXPLAINED

Each player takes 7 tiles from the bag and places them so that no other player can see them.

How to play

The core gameplay in Scrabble involves arranging tiles to form words. The player who goes first must play a word with at least two letters and must come into contact with the central square (H8).

On subsequent turns, all words must use parts of words already present on the board. Each subsequent word must use at least one letter from the words on the board. Words can be formed as long as they are read from top to bottom or from left to right.

Each player can choose between three options during their turn. They can play the board, forming words with the corresponding assigned score. A player can also choose to exchange the tiles in his hand with the same number of tiles in the draw. If desired, a player may also choose to forfeit their turn by passing.

There are 2 blank tiles for a total of 100 tiles. These tokens can be used as substitutes for any letter, but they are not worth points.

If a player plays a word during his turn, he calls the calculated score value of the played word. Scoring is discussed in the Value, Points and Scoring section of the guide. A player then reloads their hand from the shopping bag, back to a total of 7 tiles. Once the chips are removed from the bag, the play cannot be changed.

How does Scrabble end?

According to the official tournament rules, a game of Scrabble ends when a player has played all of his tiles from his rack and there are no more tiles in the bag to replenish his hand. Also, a game can end when both players make 6 turns of passing on both sides.

At the end of a game, scores are calculated and the winner is the player with the highest score.

Scrabble Regret

Since scoring is an important factor in Scrabble, there are rules to make the game process easier. The following discussion will be based on the official Scrabble rules used in tournaments.

valid words

In general, all words in the chosen dictionary are valid. However, tournament players don't have a dictionary handy to consult. Instead, players operate with their inherent knowledge. As a rule, proper names, hyphenated words and acronyms are not allowed, except those that are in common use. For tournaments, two main word lists are used, theTournament word list(TWL) and oScrabble Palabras Collins(CSW).

challenges

In an opponent's game, a player may contest the validity of the played word, as long as the opponent has not yet drawn tiles to replenish his hand. The challenger then looks up the word in the agreed upon sources. If the word is false, the opponent is forced to remove the played pieces and the turn passes to the next player.

If a challenge is unsuccessful, when the contested word is valid, penalties may or may not apply, depending on the rules used for said game.

Summary

In conclusion,Scrabble Regretson:

  • Each player buys 7 tiles.
  • The first player plays in contact with the central piece, with a minimum length of 2 letters.
  • The game continues until an end condition is reached.
  • Players can challenge words when they believe those words are invalid.

Value, Points and Score

Scrabble scoring is simple. All letter tiles have Scrabble letter values that describe the point value of each tile, which is also based on the letter distribution. Just add up the Scrabble points for each letter in the word. This also includes all previously played pieces. For example, if a player adds an S piece to a previous moveGIVEN, by rolling DICE, the player scores all 5 letters, not just their S tile.

The letter distribution for the English version of Scrabble is shown below:

Scrabble rules: how to play, points, scoring and strategy (2)

On the board, there are special squares that give bonuses to players who manage to cover them with letters. These squares include the "Double Letter", the "Triple Letter", the "Double Word" and the "Triple Word". Letter squares double or triple the score of the letter placed on that tile, while word squares do the same but for the entire word. Each of these squares can only be used once. For example, in the DICE example, if the word DICE covered a double word square, the player would get double the score for the word DICE, while the player adding the S token would not benefit from the doubling.

At the end of the game, if a player manages to remove all pieces from his hand, he is "out" and gets the sum of the opponent's remaining pieces added to his score. To keep score, a Scrabble score sheet can help.

Strategy and how to win

Here are some tips for winning and improving at Scrabble:

  • Memorize two and three letter words, this is the key to Scrabble strategy.
  • Manage your S blocks carefully as there are only 4 S blocks in the game and they can be used to form two words at once.
  • Learn hooking, which consists of extending words (adding S to RING to make SPRING), while also doing another word at the same time (FAST with the S extending RING to SPRING).
  • Learn the words "Q-no U", there are 17 valid words in TWL.
  • Play high score squares. If you can capitalize on the triple word square, you can gain a huge advantage over your opponent.
  • Save Extensions. The S block is not the only way to extend words, "ER", "ED" and "ING" can also be used.
